Critical Role Season Four Reveals the Soldiers Table

Ever since the premiere of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master Brennan Mulligan has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a colorful mix of characters, and a gripping narrative featuring angels, demons, and dark forces expanding in strength within the urban setting.

Note: Key plot points for the latest installment of Campaign 4 are included.

The Combat-Oriented Party Introduced

The third episode concluded with a major cliffhanger and presented the premier party of adventurers who will branch out from the central cast to undertake their separate journey, separate from the other two tables.

This warrior group features Teor (brought to life by Travis), Thimble (Laura), the fierce warrior (Whitney Moore), Wicander (Sam Riegel), and the mysterious adventurer (the actor).

Why Split the Party?

Given 13 cast members, it was clear from the outset that having everyone at a single group would be unworkable.

Hence, the initial installments of this story serve as an Introduction, connecting the characters’ stories before dividing into three smaller tables: Soldiers, Strategists, and Explorers.

What Defines the Soldiers Table

As described by the Dungeon Master, the combat-focused party is for participants who are drawn to a traditionally charged combat and conflict-driven gameplay experience where peaceful solutions are rare.

Initially, characters like the reluctant priest the cleric might seem mismatched, but the events of the latest installment show why these five characters are best suited for the combat party.

Motivations for Departure

First, the team has a clear idea where to go next after a brutal first encounter with the antagonists.

An old friend of Thjazi—whose demise kicked off the narrative’s action—exploited The Crow Keepers for his selfish purposes, invading the secret base, attacking the rogue, and swiping all the magical artifacts to dispose of.

Casimir then cleared his obligations and fled to a secure base in the northern region, beyond Dol-Makjar, with Cyd close behind.

Individual Reasons

Moreover, each member has a specific drive to depart the metropolitan area:

  • The agile hero, as Thjazi’s partner and closest confidant, desires retribution.
  • The knowledgeable figure knows the region and warns that it is a nasty environment.
  • The strong character and Wicander, having defied his relatives’ demands to kill the fighter and instead rescued him, have no safe haven.
  • However, their reputation as key figures in the powerful family could help the group enter places they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Furthermore, Teor pledged a unbreakable promise to Wicander for his deliverance and will now go with him anywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

Finally, all of them are wanted by the powers that control the setting for a variety of reasons, making remaining behind no longer safe:

  • The agile adventurer and Kattigan are recognized lawbreakers.
  • Tyranny and The cleric defied the powerful family and the horde of evil beings they are aligned with.
  • The fighter is targeted for elimination by the clan.

This leaves them little choice but to journey toward the northern region in pursuit of the traitor.

Upcoming Developments

Based on the recent installment’s post-show segment, we find out that the combat party will not appear in the upcoming installment, leaving the other eight cast members to round up the Questers and Planners parties.

Audiences can anticipate discovering which characters will be in which group in the season’s concluding setup installment, streaming live on October 24.
